Duck Dynasty, and the shit that has hit the fan....

Currently there is a bit of controversy about comments made by Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty in GQ (once Gentleman’s Quarterly)…  Duck Dynasty being a reality show based on a family businesses making duck calls… or maybe really a fashion empire based on camouflage… or alternately based on the antics of rural Americans… commonly “hicks” or “hillbilly’s” 

Why is anyone surprised?  They are apparently part of a traditional isolated rural community, conservative… (both socially conservative, religiously conservative,  and likely politically conservative… )  I say apparently because of this video which suggests they are really yuppies masquerading as hicks… If this is true there are other issues…  but that is a different story… but the guy who published the video is really angry… if he is right, then he should be… and I might join him in his anger… but for now, lets not go there...

But back to the Duck Dynasty folks… So, if they are what they seem then the comments which have caused the controversy should be expected…  I would almost say respected…  If honestly stated then they may reflect a point of view (which I don ‘t share) but honestly reflects their community.

I am not a hunter, but accept those who do and use what they kill…  (I do fish… and eat my catch) I am ok with guns… there is a long standing tradition for responsible gun ownership… 

I don’t watch the show (but have, but likely won’t in the future)… and just expect this… and am not particularly upset…  the comments reflect a point of view… a narrow uneducated conservative point of view, but for that community possibly honest and not unexpected… 

On the other hand there are things to be angry about…

The United Methodist Church has defrocked one of their ministers for officiating at a gay wedding… for his own son… 5 years ago… (story here)

The United Methodist Church is not particularly progressive… but they are a protestant church… an educated and at least in part urban population…  They should know better…  The basic Christian concept is about forgiveness and acceptance… of course the organized religious sects sometimes forget that… 

For now I am angry at the Methodists and forgiving of the Duck Dynasty folks…  I think of it as a honest Christian view… 

Now stepping into my asbestos underwear and hiding behind a large tree....
